Is a Crypto Trading Bot Safe?
5 Critical Questions Before You Connect
Automated trading is powerful — but connecting a bot to your exchange account requires trust. Here's how to evaluate any trading bot's security before you risk a single dollar.
Every week, traders lose funds to bots that weren't as secure as they claimed. Sometimes it's a rug pull. Sometimes it's an infrastructure failure with no stop-loss protection. Sometimes it's misleading backtests masking poor real-world performance.
The good news: you can protect yourself by asking five specific questions before you connect anything to your exchange account.
Question 1: Can the Bot Withdraw My Funds?
Red flag answer: "We handle your funds on your behalf" or vague non-answers about API permissions.
Green flag answer: "No. We use trading-only API keys. Withdrawal access is disabled by design."
This is the most fundamental security question. Modern exchanges allow you to create API keys with specific permissions. A legitimate trading bot should only ever require trading permission — never withdrawal access.
With Polaris Bot: we explicitly require clients to create API keys with withdrawals disabled. We cannot move your funds. Period. This isn't a policy — it's a technical constraint enforced at the exchange level.
Question 2: Where Does the Stop-Loss Live?
Red flag answer: "Our system monitors your positions and closes them when needed."
Green flag answer: "Stop-loss orders are placed directly on the exchange at the moment a position opens."
If the stop-loss depends on the bot's server being online, you're one outage away from an unprotected open position in a volatile market. Exchange-side stop-loss is the only safe approach — it remains active regardless of what happens to any third-party infrastructure.
Question 3: Is the Performance Data Real and Unfiltered?
Red flag answer: Backtests only, demo accounts, cherry-picked date ranges, or "track record available upon request."
Green flag answer: "Here is our full live data record — wins, losses, drawdowns — publicly visible and updated in real time."
Backtests are simulations. A bot that only shows backtests has never been tested with real money under real market conditions. Look for live data: a real account, real trades, real PnL — including losses — publicly available.
Question 4: Who Controls the API Keys?
Red flag answer: "Send us your API keys and we'll manage everything."
Green flag answer: "You create the API keys on your exchange. You hold them. You can revoke them at any time."
You should always retain control of your API keys. Never share the actual key secrets with anyone — not even a reputable provider. A legitimate bot asks for read-only access or uses OAuth-style connections where you authorize access without revealing the keys themselves. At minimum, you should be able to revoke access instantly by deleting the API keys on your exchange.
Question 5: What Happens to My Capital During Extreme Market Moves?
Red flag answer: Vague assurances, no drawdown data, or claims of "zero risk."
Green flag answer: Published drawdown metrics, clear risk parameters, and honest disclosure about floating drawdown risk.
Every trading strategy has drawdown. A bot that claims otherwise is lying. Look for real-time drawdown visibility — not just peak performance numbers. Polaris Bot publishes both real drawdown (actual realized losses) and floating drawdown (open position unrealized losses) on the public Transparency Center.
